Topher Bettis founded Fluent Mortgage because he believed Oregon borrowers deserved better than what the big lenders were willing to give them — faster answers, sharper rates, and a real human on the other end of the phone. Eric Bonnin, joined him at Fluent in 2019. Eric served in the United States Marine Corps. He came to this work because he wanted to do it the right way, especially for the veterans whose benefit he had earned alongside them.
Two years ago, we made a decision we thought was the right one: we closed Fluent’s doors and went to work for a large national bank, helping build out its national VA lending division. The mission was to help Oregon veterans who were relocating out of state still get a great loan from people who understood the VA program. The scale was real. The intent was right.
What we found inside that bank was exactly what we’d built Fluent to avoid. Approvals stacked up behind layers of people who’d never met the client. Files sat in queues. The rates the brochures advertised weren’t the rates clients actually got. And when a veteran called their loan officer the night before closing, more often than not, nobody picked up.
So we came home.
In March 2026 we reformed Fluent Mortgage — same name, sharper purpose — this time as 50/50 partners. One Marine veteran. One civilian. Both back in Eugene, where we started, doing the work the way we always wanted to do it. That’s why Fluent Mortgage exists, in this version of it: because we’ve now worked both sides of this industry, and we know which one actually serves the people writing the checks.
Fluent Mortgage exists to deliver the most competitive rates available, with the highest level of service, to the Oregon communities we call home — and to make sure the veterans who earned the VA loan benefit actually keep the savings it was designed to give them, month after month, year after year.
That’s it. No corporate mission-statement filler. That’s the job.
We’re veteran-owned and operated.
Half of Fluent Mortgage is owned and run by a Marine veteran who holds the Certified Veteran Lending Specialist (CVLS) designation. That isn’t a marketing line — it’s a structural commitment. VA loans aren’t a side product for us. They’re the reason the doors are open. When you sit down with us, you’re sitting down with someone who understands the benefit you earned, the paperwork from DD-214 to COE, and the difference an eighth of a point makes over 30 years.
We’re local, not national.
We don’t have a call center in another time zone or a regional manager three states away approving your file. We’re a small Eugene-based shop with a small Oregon team — which means decisions get made fast, exceptions get reviewed by a human who knows your name, and nothing about your loan gets lost in someone else’s queue.
We answer the phone.
Sounds simple. It isn’t, anymore. When you call us during a home search, before an offer, the night before closing — we pick up. If we can’t, we call back the same day. Your loan is the biggest financial decision most people make. The least we can do is be reachable.
We use technology to lower your cost — not ours.
Big lenders use tech to cut their headcount and pocket the difference. We use it the other way around: a lean operation with modern tools means lower overhead, and lower overhead means more competitive rates and fees passed on to you. That’s the entire model — and it’s the model we walked away from a national bank to come back to. We can compete with the giants on price while still doing the work by hand where it matters.
There are bigger mortgage companies. There are flashier ones. There are none in Oregon that will work harder to earn a veteran’s trust, save a borrower money, or pick up the phone when it rings.
That’s our why. That’s why we built this.
